Ink

All of the inks used to print on envelopes are water-born, which means the industry uses pigments instead of dyes. Pigments dissipate in recycling solutions.
The industry also reuses colors for ink that is not used, which allows it to be made into black ink that can continue to be reused. What’s left is a small amount of residual ink and in some envelope printing facilities, new washing systems allow the industry to literally recover the pigments out of the ink. The industry has made great progress and is close to recovering 100% of the ink used.
